Robot welcomes the Queen

In the presence of the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the 50th anniversary of the Queens Lecture took place at Technische Universität Berlin on June 24th, 2015. German President Joachim Gauck, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, were among the guests of honor. The “Queen’s Lecture” of this year was given by British art historian and director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor.

The DAI-Labor at TU Berlin had the honor to welcome the Queen with an autonomously acting robot. The NAO-robot, programmed by DAI-Labor researchers, recognized the Queen on its own and turned into her direction. As a response to the question “What do we do when we see the Queen?”, the robot started waving with his arm. The Queen looked pretty amused when she came face-to-face with the robot. The robot belongs to one of the numerous projects at the DAI-Labor. The research facility headed by Prof. Dr. Sahin Albayrak performs research and development in order to provide solutions for a new generation of systems and services – “smart services and smart systems”. 

The “Queen’s Lecture” was established in 1965 as a gift from the Queen to the city of Berlin on the occasion of her state visit. Since 1997 each year an outstanding British scientist gives a lecture about his/her research at the TU Berlin.
