The Competence Center “Future Communication Systems” conducts research towards the overall vision of shaping the communication solutions for the envisioned digital era of interconnected everything. For this purpose we design and develop intelligent network and communication solutions intended to meet the inherent challenges of virtualized networks, the heterogeneous device layer in the age of IoT, network orchestration, and in general the application of learning to implant intelligence into all network stretches from the edge to the core of the network.

The research and development activities are performed within the application domains of Smart Cities, particularly Communication, Connected and Autonomous Mobility, Industry 4.0, eHealth, Smart Grid solutions, and more.

The FCS activities are supported by inter-connected testbeds, which are continuously improved and upgraded to represent the state-of-the-art and enable the research on the current challenges faced by communication networks.
